Why You Should Stop Eating Seed Oils

The last couple weeks I’ve had higher energy, ran my fastest miles on my runs, lost 5 pounds and genuinely feel my mood has improved. The secret hack: I stopped consuming seed oils.

 

What Are Seed Oils?

Your grandpa grew up eating butter, steak, milk and eggs and at 65 he had a higher testosterone than the average 25-year-old man. Modern man eats way more seed oils than your grandpa.  

Seed oils, also know as vegetable oils are “edible” oils extracted from plants such as soybean, cottonseed, sunflower. corn and canola. These foods are highly processed and require the use of chemicals.

These seed oils are often labeled as “heart-healthy” alternatives to butter, lard and tallow (fat).

Fun fact: McDonald’s fries really did taste different back in the day. In 1990, McDonald’s swapped out the beef fat for vegetable oil. A man named Phil Sokolof had a heart attack in 1966 and blamed it on the cholesterol and fat commonly found in fast food. He began to lobby against the beef tallow cooking practice and eventually got the attention of McDonalds.

Is this healthier? Unlikely. Vegetable oil has high levels of trans fat, which is widely considered to be the worst kind of fat. Trans fats cause weight gain, digestive issues and many cardiovascular diseases.

 

Why Are Seed Oils Bad For You?

Seed oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids. This is something your body needs, but humans have historically consumed them in a 1:1 ratio with omega-3 fatty acids. The modern Western diet has shifted this ratio to 20:1. According to recent studies, too much omega-6 relative to omega-3 may contribute to chronic inflammation.

Chronic inflammation is a cause of many common diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and arthritis. Too much omega-6 fat also puts you at increased risk of obesity.

This is where the “Soy” meme comes from. For those who don’t know, in certain masculine circles and other online communities, it’s commonplace to refer to weak and effeminate men as “soy.” The term is based on the presence of phytoestrogens which are found in soybeans and seed oils, or the foods containing them.

According to a study by Canadian researchers published in November 2009, soy products contain the second highest relative phytoestrogen content after nuts and oilseeds.

The earliest archived use of the term "soyboy" as a pejorative on 4chan was submitted to a thread on the /tv/ (television & film) board on April 18th, 2017. Moving on…

 

What Are The Alternatives

So now that you’re aware of the dangers seed oils pose to your health, what are your options?

My personal favorite is avocado oil. Though expensive, it’s a much healthier alternative.

You can also use butter, olive oil, tallow, ghee and coconut oil. I was going to do a detailed write up of the benefits of each healthy oil, but Seed Oil Rebellion did a fantastic job so I’ll just link to his page here.

 

My Personal Experience

Since quitting seed oils, I've dropped 7 pounds in the last month. I have been performing better in the gym and on my runs. A week ago, I set a new PR (Personal Record) for my 5K with a time of 25:12. Not bad for a guy who can bench 300. My mile time is improving too. I ran a 6:59 mile last week

Since quitting seed oils, I even felt a genuine shift in my mood. I feel happier, more laid back and energetic. I am slower to anger. It feels like problems and petty things that used to irritate me just bounce right off of me. I’m calm and sincerely happier.  

Am I sticking to this diet 100%? No. I’m not. But I’m very close. Occasionally I’ll go out to eat and maybe order something with unhealthy seed oils. But this is on rare occasions. Even when I do go out, I typically order healthy food that isn’t fried. And after eating this way for so long, it’s becoming a habit.

I don’t feel like I’m missing out. My body craves good food. And when you know that unhealthy food will make you sick, make your body perform worse and cause weight gain, you really don’t want to go back.

It’s truly paradigm shifting. You realize that 99% of the western world is eating in such a way that it makes them fat, miserable and unhappy. But they don’t know any better. It’s what they’ve always done.

Some studies show that seed oils may even lower your testosterone. “The testosterone levels in the serum and the testes were found to be significantly lower in the canola oil group than in the soybean oil group”

Seed oils are not the only reason for lowering testosterone levels in men, but they are a massive part of the problem. And yes, testosterone levels in men are dropping. And yes, you are right to be concerned.
