Why would anyone want to spend hours every day writing? As a student I dreaded writing assignments. Now I write every day and it’s given me amazing opportunities.

Writing has helped me make money online. My thoughts are more organized than ever. And I am able to share my thoughts and ideas with the world. Every man wants to leave his mark on the world. Writing gives you the opportunity.

So how do you make your writing stand out from the limitless information available online?

  1. Start writing every day
Writing is like a muscle. And like a muscle, it's tough to get started and tough to get back in to when you quit. Making it a daily habit will help you grow as a writer and gain a loyal audience.

  2. Live an interesting life
The internet is full of people who spout off about what they read online. Ranting about pop politics they barely comprehend. The same stuff that anyone can find with an internet connection. The most captivating writers are those who go outside and write about their experience in the real world. If you want your writing to be interesting, you’re gonna have to live an interesting life.

  3. Write to your past self
One of the best ways to share advice with your reader is to speak to your younger self. What do you wish someone had told you when you grew up? What recent problem did you encounter and solve? Share your wisdom and insights and you will grow an audience. This is the best way for you to write from a place of authority and help your reader better themselves.

  4. Present solutions with your writing
If you write about problems without providing solutions, you aren’t writing. You’re ranting. Most people can rant and rave on their personal blog. And few people will take notice. To provide value to your reader, you need to offer solutions with the problems you bring up. This will make your writing stand out as useful.

  5. Create your writing routine
You should have a place where you do most of your deep writing. Block out all distractions and noises Tell people that you need to focus. Often times, I'll write in a notebook first. A computer is full of distractions.

  6. Get organized
I use Evernote to track ideas, longer pieces that I'm working on, and every little idea that may grow into something more substantial. Evernote also syncs your data on the cloud so you can write out a framework of ideas on your iphone when an idea pops in your head. Then let’s you finish in detail, when you get home to your laptop. Ever come up with a great idea only to forget it? The great thing about Evernote is you can search for ideas instantly.

  7. Speak to your audience
When you first start writing, you're going to want to talk about yourself but this is going to alienate your reader. If you speak to your reader, they'll be engaged with your words. You should be writing "you" much more than "I."

  8. Write listicles
For an example, look at this list you're reading right now. As someone who has been a writer for 5 years, I know what type of content people are looking for. And everyone loves a good listicle. They are easy to read, informative and straight to the point.

  9. Network with other writers
Thanks to the internet, this has never been easier. Social media can be a great place to reach out to your favorite writers. Over the years, I've reached out to many other writers. And because I write online, people reach out to me. Many of these people have become friends.

You can even create group messages on twitter to inspire and share ideas with one another. If you’re looking for a group of like-minded men, check out my private community, The Spartan Tribe. Click here to learn more.

  10. Create a list of the writers in your network
Bookmark their websites. Create a list on Twitter of their accounts. Support them and be inspired by them.

  11. Tweet more
Twitter is an amazing tool for writers. You get instant feedback from your followers. This helps you test ideas and see what content works. Twitter is the ultimate networking tool. Find writers that you look up to and follow them on Twitter

  12. Rewrite your first drafts
"The first draft of anything is always shit." - Ernest Hemingway.
Look over your first drafts as if you are the reader. Be critical and find ways to improve your words. Writing is a process and editing turns shit into good work.

  13. Write first, Edit second.
Writing is a creative process. Editing is analytical. You need to let your brain focus on being creative first and analytical once the creative process is done. That means you can ignore the typos and grammatical errors until you've got your point across. Save the editing for the second draft.

  14. Be economical with your words
Don’t confuse pretentious writing that pontificates for pages, as good prose. When you can say something succinctly, it will be more memorable. Quick snappy writing is key, especially today when the average person has a microwave mindset.

  15. Don’t sweat grammatical rules
How you say it is more important than if it's grammatically correct. This is more true on social media. Getting your point across is more important than speaking “correctly.” Write as if you are speaking to your friends rather than your high school English teacher.

  16. Controversy leads to more eyeballs
Don't be afraid to upset people with your words. Controversy is great for engagement and necessary. Trust me. I grew my Twitter account to over 100,000 people. To do this, you’re going to upset some people. People don't want to hear that the sky is blue. They want to be told the Earth is flat. If it's not upsetting someone, it's not worth writing.

  17. Fuck cancel culture
Say what you want. Don't let a vocal minority stop you from sharing your ideas with the world. If you met these people in real life, you wouldn’t pay them any mind. Why do you let them influence you online?

  18. Talk in absolutes
If you use the following words: maybe, I think, possibly, you're writing will come off as weak and lacking confidence. Your audience knows that its your opinion. Using weak language makes you come across as if you're unsure of yourself. This makes it hard for your audience to be persuaded by your points.

  19. Don’t judge your past work too harshly
If you hate your early writing, don’t worry. This is a sign of growth. I cringe when I read much of my early writing. But that’s OK. It was part of the process that helped me get to where I am today. We all have to walk before we can run.

  20. Hit the publish button
This is the hardest point, but also the most important. Don't even worry about whether it's good. You won't know at first. I still can't tell on some pieces. But this helps you reach people, grow your audience and most importantly grow your writing skills.

There are plenty of options to publish online. Many of them, free. You can write on Medium, Twitter, Instagram (captions) and even your own email list.
